Climathon has brought communities and citizens together every October since 2015 to co-create solutions to local climate concerns. In 2021, hundreds of towns worldwide gathered together to celebrate Global Climathon Day, either in person or online. Thousands of people worked together to promote climate awareness, disrupt the existing quo, and reinvent how we create, move, and consume in the future.
We encouraged the community to aspire for big, ambitious, and transformative climate action, even though the Climathon program is theme agnostic and each city chooses its own local challenges.
This Year on 5th October, as the MokoSoko Team, we had the chance to pinpoint the climate changes and how they affect Mombasa City in Kenya. Extreme climate disasters, including floods, droughts, and strong winds, have already wreaked havoc in Mombasa. These impacts of climate variability and change pose grave threats to the city dwellers’ lives and livelihoods and the country’s socio-economic development.
We talked about possible solutions that would be geared towards stopping climatic change. There are acts we can do, modifications in our routines that, if adopted by a large number of people, have the potential to make a significant difference in our naughty footprint.
Participate in your community.
Getting more involved in your community can help you not only better understand its issues and why things are done the way they are, but it can also give you the opportunity to improve your surroundings, which can be surprisingly satisfying.
Buy Local Food and Products from Sustainable Sources.
Purchasing local products may not be as simple as it appears. Still, it has numerous benefits, including reduced shipping costs and impact, less packaging waste, and local employment development.
Use a bicycle or walk for Short Distances as an Alternative to Using a Vehicle.
This does make a difference, and as a vehicle enthusiast, I find it difficult to accept that automobiles are substantial polluters. If we all decided to act now and avoid using any automobiles whenever necessary, it would go a long way in saving the land we live on.
It is our responsibility to work towards keeping our mother earth safe and healthy because our survival depends on it.
